Germany Retail Sales Decline for Second Month in Row in April
The data, adjusted for calendar and seasonal effects, followed a revised 0.3% drop recorded in March, as stated by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). On a yearly basis, retail sales also slipped by 0.3% compared with April 2025.
The overall downturn was largely attributed to weaker performance at petrol stations. As reported by Destatis, fuel-related sales were negatively impacted by developments linked to the conflict in the Middle East.
Sales at gas stations dropped 4% month-on-month in April and were down 10.4% compared with the same period last year, with the category also including purchases from convenience stores located at fuel stations.
In contrast, the food retail sector showed a monthly increase of 3.2% compared with March, although it recorded a slight annual decline of 0.1%.
